Fitness and Fun

We have been busy finishing up with our fall fitness testing for our students in grades 2-5.  The fitness tests are a separate portion of the report card and consist of a PACER running endurance test, push-ups, curl-ups and a sit and reach flexibility test.  We also keep track of these scores for each student's fitness report that is sent home in the spring.  Students will go through all of these same tests again in the spring so you will have some data to compare.  Each grade level is busy working on different activities, some of which include volleyball, over and underhand throwing, whole class fitness games and locomotor activities.  Please reach out to us if you have any questions after first trimester report cards come home.

2017-2018

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year.  We are excited to get things started and see everyone back in the gym.  There have been a few changes in staffing at Woodland this year and the PE department is one of the areas that saw some change.  Mrs. Peterson is not teaching at Woodland this year, however, we are welcoming Mrs. Hanson to Woodland as our new PE teacher.  Mrs. Hanson also teaches at Palmer Lake so her time at Woodland will be short.  Mrs. Carel and Mrs. Hiestand are still holding down the fort at Woodland as well.

We will be starting our school year with some whole group activities, tag games and general movement activities.  All classes will participate in warm-up activities each day when they come to class, that is a routine that we keep for the beginning of every class.  Fall fitness testing will be starting soon.  We will also be moving into some racket and paddle activities as well as some 2 and 4 square for our younger grades.

As always, please help your children to remember tennis shoes on PE days.  Students not wearing tennis shoes are not allowed to participate for safety reasons.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or email and we will help you out!

We are looking forward to a great year!

January 2016

We are back into the swing of things and the kids are busy in all sorts of activities.  Students in grades K-6 have been completing their continuous movement assessments and jogging anywhere from 8-18 minutes.  They have done a fabulous job of showing that they know how to be smart joggers and find a "comfortable" jogging speed.

We are currently working on volleyball activities and have a wonderful student teacher Mr. Flikeid who will be working with our students through the beginning of March.

Looking ahead, our school is excited to participate in Jump Rope for Heart this year.  We will have our kick-off on Feb. 2nd and the students will be jumping during PE classes on February 23rd and 24th.  Look for information coming home the week of February 6th in the Wednesday mail.  If you are interested in more info now, here is a link to our building site.  http://jumphoops2017mwa.kintera.org/woodlandelembrooklynparkmnhttp

December 2016

Last Thursday we had our FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 kickoff during Eagle Celebration.  Our student leadership team was introduced and there was a brief description of the program.  Remember this program is FREE!
This week students have been signing a poster during physical education to join our school in promoting healthy eating and being physically active for 60 minutes a day.  We are also encouraging students and staff to register on the Fuel Up to Play 60 website.
When you register you need to create a user name and password. These cannot be a name.  Some suggestions might be your favorite sport and food. Please remember to write down your password so you can re-visit the website frequently.

More information will be provided next week. If you have questions please ask any of the physical education teachers.
